Hey guys! :O

I forgot if I posted this a couple weeks ago or not but I was going to apply for Resident Assistant in college and I got it :O Woooo. Out of a hundred or so people for about 20 positions in different dorms. Unfortunately, I got to be RA in one of the worst dorms on campus, and because I'm out of state, constantly moving stuff into and out of dorms isn't necessarily the easiest. Makes it better that it's $10,000 scholarship plus required desk job salary etc. If I decline it now, I'll never get another housing position in college ever again, but if I take it, I'm pretty much guaranteed another $10,000 scholarship RA position next year.

I'm also pretty confident that I'm going to be able to get Theme Housing which is the easiest way for underclassmen to get into the campus apartments. So here's the summary.

Over the next two years (trying to graduate in 3 years):

RA: $20,000 - $3200 (extra for being in a required double room) + $3200 (desk job salary) = $20,000 less than expected total college cost.

Apartment (don't have to move stuff all the time): $3200 more (apartments are expensiver) + $500 (furniture) = $3,700 more than expected college cost.

I'm conflicted because I love the idea of being able to live in an apartment, the convenience and all, but I'm costing my parents $72,000 over three years and I guess any help in paying for it would be great.

Plus this is $9k and it's really close to home :3

Take the money. Do anything to avoid loans. Debt is crippling

Honestly my suggestion would be to do it and they maybe not attempt to graduate in 3 years. You'll probably get better grades if you take 4 and you'll have a better time too.

This may seem harsh but is this really a question? $20 large seems like the obvious answer here man. They are basically paying you $10k a year to be an RA. There is definitely more responsibility involved but taking $20k off your school debt could actually be life-changing.

Promise to be a cool RA though. I had a mega bitch.

Living in an apartment really made my GPA suffer. Still 10 times better than dorm life.

Apparently for my dorm I'll be RA of, I'll spend most of my time citing people for smoking inside or near the building or calling Campus Police when the frat people next door start chucking tables and beer bottles into the windows.

As a recent college grad and newly-wed, we've actually managed to be debt free within the next three months. I gotta say, based on my friends who couldn't make that happen, fight to come out of school with as little debt as possible. Graduating a little later, in the grand scheme of things, is the move. Especially with more money and especially more experience under your belt. During these times, we young guys need to come out of school with the longest resumes we can, with the strongest financial base we can. Interest rates aren't what they used to be, and the job market isn't either.

Also: I had an IS300 for almost a decade. It was really a GREAT car. So great, my wife wishes she hadn't bought her new car and just drove my IS instead. (The new car is what we are almost finished paying off) Name another 10+ year old car a non-car enthusiast woman would rather drive than a brand new semi-luxury one.

I remember my RA giving me an alcohol violation my freshman year. She also made me pour out a fifth of Fireball. Never received the fine or got called by the office of student conduct. Probably one of the things that will show up when I'm about to graduate.
